Avoid Cavities This Holiday Season With These Dental Tips

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Unless you’re a tooth! Yikes! According to colgate.com, there are many sneaky holiday candy culprits that are harming our teeth. With that being said, it’s generally hard to stay on top of our dental health around the holidays. Especially with endless sweets around, at all times. Needless to say, we need to avoid cavities!

Though it would be nice if Santa could give us a cavity-free Christmas, we don’t think that’s in his field. Family Dentistry of Columbus is here to provide you with a few tips and tricks so you can have a cavity-free holiday season!

Do You Really Need That Soda?

If you’re a sipper, what’s the point in drinking that soda? Drink it and be done with it. Exchange out whatever you were sipping on with some water or hot tea. This is a much better decision. Not only for your dental health but for your overall physical health as well!

Water, on the other hand, is a great alternative for soda. Make sure to have water in hand while you are indulging in a sweet treat. Drinking water in between bites can actually help rinse the sugar build up on your teeth, in turn, preventing plaque on your teeth.

We Eat Sweets Year Around

Let’s face it. The general population indulges in sweets year-round, not just around the holidays. During the holidays we indulge in an extreme amount of them! So, be real, you can still have a Merry Christmas without eating your way into a cavity. Set boundaries between yourself and the sweets so you can keep that pearly white smile!

Brush and Floss Daily — Family Dentistry Columbus, Ga

The holidays can be a hard time to avoid sugary treats and drinks. However, they can also be a great time to start a good habit! Make your New Years’ resolution to brush and floss your teeth twice a day after meals. It’s the perfect time to start a new beginning that will positively impact your dental health! (p.s. Your dentist will love you for it).

Go Easy on the Wine

The holidays aren’t necessarily ‘all’ about alcohol. However, wine seems to be a staple at many family Christmas events. Maybe even a bit too much of it! Just remember, if you are drinking alcohol AT LEAST have a cup of water in hand as well. Consuming alcohol all night (or day) can easily dry out your mouth!
